An internal monologue consists of the inner thoughts and feelings of a character. These are shared with the reader, but not between the other characters in the story. This gives a sense of the private thoughts, emotions and experiences of a character, as well as their fears, dreams, desires, values and beliefs. Internal monologue can communicate both conscious and unconscious thoughts and responses, and may give the reader a sense of a person which differs from a character’s view of themselves.
